Love It and Thank It. It will Understand
The Food Nerd Series
At what point did human beings become so arrogant as to think that they alone have consciousness and the rest of nature is somehow unconscious–to be slaughtered, raped and pillaged for human benefit? If we have food to eat it is a gift from the earth.
Many people say grace around the table before eating as a way of thanking God (a higher consciousness) for providing the food about to be eaten. But it does not occur to them to thank the food itself which is the thing being eaten. Does that imply the food has no consciousness? Does this separate the Creator from the Creation?
Food has a consciousness too and its vitality, nutrition and goodness is being transformed for our benefit. Let us be grateful and whisper our gratitude to the food before we consume it. Let us show our love and appreciation.
As Kahlil Gibran said in ‘The Prophet‘ about eating and drinking:
“let your board stand an altar on which the pure and the innocent of forest and plain are sacrificed for that which is purer and still more innocent in man.”
I did not grow up with this notion. It is slowly being ingrained. I believe it is one worth cultivating. In fact I have to ask about our general unconsciousness as we go about preparing food. Do we prepare it unconsciously while thinking of other things? Or do we love and appreciate it while we are preparing it?
I believe it could totally change the very nature of the food we eat if we make it a practice to love and appreciate it before and while we eat it.
Food understands and feels! It knows if you eat it with respect and gratitude. Give at least that much to it before you eat!
